Calibration

Before completing a calibration, ensure the cameras have been adjusted and focused. The position of the object to be scanned or the turntable must also be marked.

Set up calibration panels

Select calibration pattern scale

Hold the object to be scanned in front of the calibration panel and determine which scale best fits the object to be scanned. The pattern should be larger than that of the object to be scanned. The Pattern scale can be found beside the calibration pattern on the calibration panel.

For objects larger than 200mm, use the 240mm pattern on the back of the calibration panel

Update Calibr. Scale [mm]: in HP 3D Scan.

Aligning calibration panel

  1. Place the calibration panel assembly directly in front of the projector at approximately the same distance as the object to be scanned.

  2. Hold a small sheet of paper in front of the calibration panel, where the object to scan will be placed. Using the black slider located on the top of the projector, adjust the focus until a clear pattern is projected.

  3. Ensure both cameras have an unobstructed view of the calibration panels. The camera should be set such that 15 - 70 calibration markers are displayed in the camera view. All key markers must be in view of both cameras

Do not adjust the camera focus when completing a calibration

4. Calibrate

Click Calibrate

Wait for calibration to complete. This may take a minute or two.

During calibration, the scanning software first measures the position, orientation, focal length and distortion characteristics of the camera. Then a pattern sequence is projected to measure the same optical characteristics of the projector. For colour texturing, a white balance is also performed.

After a successful calibration, a checkerboard pattern is projected with the corners falling exactly into the calibration points. If the pattern is incomplete or misaligned, restart the calibration process.

The scanner calibration will need to be completed whenever the object being scanned requires a different scale pattern or if the camera position or focus has been adjusted
