Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is an inexpensive way to get started 3D scanning requiring no specialised hardware. All you need is a camera and a post processor (scanning software)

How it works:

  1. A collection of images are taken of an object or environment at multiple angles.

  2. Photogrammetry software is used to stitch these photographs together in 3D space by analysing common features and triangulating their position relative to other frames and camera positions

Typical Applications:

  • Architecture, Planning Creating terrain or site data (Mapping and Land Aerial Surveying)

  • Archaeology & Cultural Heritage

  • AR, VR and console games Creating digitised versions of medium & large objects & scenes

Benefits

  • Full colour & texture scans

  • Medium Range

  • Scan large objects quickly - synchronous capture with multiple devices

Disadvantages

  • Low/Medium Resolution. Scans best suited for 3D rending with texture rather

  • Significant post processing

  • No real-time feedback.
