Choosing a 3D Scanner

Before preparing an object or environment for scanning, the appropriate scanner must be chosen.

When selecting a scanner, consider the desired outcome. What accuracy & resolution is desired?

Accuracy

How closely the does the scan data need to represent the actual shape and dimensions of the object/environment being scanned?

Resolution

What fidelity or Level of detail is desired?

All technical specifications, including accuracy, resolution and file output types can be found here

Also consider what scanning method you would prefer;

Handheld

Artec Eva & Artec Space Spider

Advantages

  • Flexibility Objects can easily be captured from various angles, enabling a more comprehensive and detailed scan. Larger and more precious objects can remain stationary during the scanning process.

  • Real-time Feedback Scanning results are updated in real-time, ensuring proper coverage.

  • Fast Setup Handheld scanners are calibrated in the factory and do not need recalibration before a scanning session

Disadvantages

  • Operator Skill Scan outcome is highly dependant on operator's skills and experience in maintaining consistent scanning motion and avoiding human-induced errors.

  • May be physically demanding Covering large areas may take longer with handheld scanners

Mounted / Fixed Scanner

Artec Eva, Artec Space Spider & HP David SLS

Advantages

  • Stability As scanners are fixed in place on tripods / mounting systems, motion-induced errors during scanning are significantly reduced, resulting in less noise and higher accuracy

  • Automation When mounted, SLS scanners can take advantage of automated scanning features, allowing for more faster acquisition with minimal intervention.

Disadvantages

  • Limited Flexibility Due to the scanners fixed viewpoint, complex objects or hard to reach areas can be difficult to capture. Typically this means more scans and more intervention is required to fully capture the object

  • Slow Setup Before a scanning session calibration is required. This can take several minutes

During your practical demonstration you will learn how to scan using Artec Studios or HP3D scan. Before booking your demonstration, consider which method of scanning you prefer.
