To preserve the precise geometry of a model, files should be submitted for CNC in their native CAD software file type. Mesh files like .stl while good for 3d printing can be problematic when it comes to 3d milling. dFab's list of suitable file types is as follows:
2.5D & 2D Sheet Processingplanar forms or profile cut from flat sheets
When should .stl files be submitted?
.Stl files should only be submitted when a native CAD model is not available. For example models constructed from point clouds, scan results or downloaded files. Stl files will have the following limitations;
Resolution
what you see in flat shaded mode (render mesh hugs the wireframe) on your screen is what the part will look like. We cannot increase the resolution.
File Size Limit: 100mb
File Naming Conventions
All CNC files must be submitted in a compressed .zip folder.
