Extraction Snorkles & Hot Wire Cutters

There are 4 Extraction Snorkel stations located in the Project Assembly Space G1.21. These snorkels must be used when operating the hot wire cutters or soldering.

The extraction workstations should not be used for

  • painting (spray booth must be used)

  • casting (all casting can be undertaken in the HOT or WaM workshops)

    or

  • any processes with highly volatile substances

If you are unsure, ask a dFab staff member

Extraction Snorkel Operation

To operate the extraction snorkels,

  1. Change the exhaust fan switch to the ON position. Once the extraction is in operation a Green LED indicator light will illuminate. If this light does not illuminate, contact dFab staff.

  2. Open extraction gate

  3. Position hood 15-20cm from the work area

  4. To terminate extraction, change the exhaust fan switch to the OFF position. This will turn off the LED indicator light.

Hot Wire Cutter Operation

  1. Turn on Extraction & ensure the extraction gate is open

  2. Plug in hot wire cutter & turn socket switch on

  3. Turn hot wire cutter switch ON

  4. Test cut a piece of foam.

If the foam does not cut cleanly, adjust the dial to modify the hot wire temperature

  5. Cut all desired pieces of foam

  6. Turn hot wire cutter switch OFF

  7. Turn socket switch OFF & Unplug the hot wire cutter from the wall socket

  8. Turn off Extraction

Never touch the tensioned wire with your hands or any other body part

Severe burns can occur with inappropriate use.

Much care must be taken whilst operating the foam cutters.
