Spray Booth

The Open Access Spray Booth is suitable for small to medium size projects. For large scale projects, staff/students may request access to the walk-in spray booth located in dFab's high-risk area.

Compulsory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

To ensure your safety, respirators must be either;

  • Organic fume spray/mist disposable respirator (supplied by dFab) OR

  • Twin filter half mask respirator with organic vapour filters (BYO)

Suitable Paints

All paints must be acrylic or acrylic-based.

When you are purchasing your spray paint, please ensure the label says “Acrylic" or "Acrylic Based". If you are unsure, please ask the service staff prior to purchase.

Spray Can Safety

Before using any spray paint, read all directions. Some new spray cans feature a safety mechanism preventing accidental discharge of paint. When using spray cans ensure you are;

  • Wearing a respirator & face shield

  • Carefully following instructions set out by the manufacturer

  • Not directing the spray head towards yourself or others.

Spray Booth Operation

Before turning on the spray both ensure;

  • You are wearing a respirator & face shield

  • The spray booth is clear of other staff/students' work. If work remains in the spray booth, notify dFab staff. Do not spray over or damage another's work.

  1. Initiate the spray booth by turning the booth ON/OFF switch to the ON position. When the spray booth is turned on, the YELLOW light will illuminate indicating that the Booth is purging. Do not commence spraying yet.

  1. After a couple of minutes, the GREEN light will illuminate to indicate that the booth has been purged and is ready to be used. Spraying can now commence.

  1. When spraying is complete, The booth can be turned OFF. Turn the booth ON/OFF switch to the OFF position. The light will turn WHITE to indicate Post Purging. At this point, staff/students may leave the spray booth ensuring to take all their belongings with them.
